Municipality Donji Milanovac
The initiative for returning the status of municipality to Donji Milanovac is part of the project "Ask the citizens" which is supported by USAID (US Agency for International Development) and ISC (Institute for Sustainable Communities) and implemented by Center for Civil Society Development PROTECTA in partnership with Civic Association "Taliata" from Donji Milanovac.
For the period of 09/08 to 16/08, 2009 this civic initiative, which is related to changes of the Law on Territorial Organization of Serbia, was supported by 2600 inhabitants of Majdanpek Municipality, which is more than 10% of total number of people with voting right in this municipality.
Donji Milanovac had the status of municipality until 1965 when it was incorporated into Majdanpek, which is now the center of the municipality and has 2 city settlements and 12 related villages. The initiators of the idea for future Municipality Donji Milanovac consider that the status of the municipality would improve the use of available resources and that the inhabitants could satisfy their needs in Milanovac itself, without travelling 60 to 80 kilometers. More successful use of resources would provide jobs for larger number of young people, by which they will be motivated to stay and work on this territory. This would stop the migration of the inhabitants to bigger cities.
